What is HEIC to JPG?
HEIC is Apple's high-efficiency image format, but it is notoriously difficult to open on older Windows machines or upload to legacy web forms. Our HEIC converter utilizes a WebAssembly port of the libheif library to decode the image locally and re-encode it as a universally compatible JPG, all without sending your personal photos to a server.
A note about file privacy

- Before processing: strip GPS and camera metadata if the picture is sensitive, because many image tools preserve EXIF data through conversion.
- While processing: watch the Network tab. A library download is expected; a request carrying your file bytes is an upload.
- After downloading: scan unfamiliar results before opening them. A file that looks converted can still be malicious.

iPhone photos on a Windows PC

Technical Architecture
HEVC decode in the browser
HEIC files use the HEVC (H.265) codec, an MPEG standard. A WebAssembly build of the open source libheif library decodes the image to raw pixels right on your device. No server ever sees the file.
JPEG encoding
The decoded pixels are re-encoded to a standard baseline JPEG using your browser canvas. Baseline JPEG opens on every operating system, browser, and printer made in the last two decades.
Color space handling
iPhone HEIC photos use wide color (Display P3). The conversion maps the image to the sRGB space that JPEG expects, so colors look right on screens that do not support wide gamut.
EXIF and metadata
The original shooting data, such as camera model, date, and location tags, can be carried into the new file or stripped out. You choose before conversion, and it all stays local.
Local only by design
Every byte is processed inside your browser tab. There is no upload, no API call, and no copy stored on our side. This is what keeps the photos private.
Offline operation
After the page loads, the conversion engine runs without the internet. You can close the tab and nothing about your photos was ever sent out.

Why HEIC exists in the first place
For most of the internet age, JPEG was the photo format. It was finalized back in 1992 and it just worked everywhere. The problem is that JPEG is old, and it is not very efficient. As phone cameras grew to 12, 48, and even 200 megapixels, those JPEG files started eating storage fast. Apple needed a format that kept the same quality while taking less room, and that is where HEIC came in. It builds on the HEIF container standard from MPEG and uses the HEVC codec (H.265) to compress each photo. The result is a file that is roughly half the size of a JPEG at the same visual quality, which means more photos on your phone and smaller iCloud backups. The catch is that being efficient and being compatible are two different things. Windows, many Android phones, and countless websites never learned to read HEIC, so the photo that saved you space on your iPhone becomes a headache the moment you try to share it. That is the moment a converter earns its keep. Instead of uploading your picture to a stranger server, you can turn it into a plain JPG right here and move on.
Keeping your photos private
A photo of your family, your home, or your friends is personal data. Under the GDPR, photographs are personal data, and they can become special category biometric data when processed in a way that identifies a person. Sending that photo to a cloud converter means a copy lands on someone else computers, which raises real questions about where it goes next. Doing the decode in your browser avoids that entirely.
